Prep is one of the questions I get asked the most. It’s also the most important question. The truth is, if you don’t prep correctly, your paint job may fail. It can look great at first and then over time it can chip off. So the truth is, it’s better to do the correct prep right away so that you have a lasting finish. Trust me, the little bit of “extra work” in the beginning will be worth it. Fusion Mineral Paint has made it really easy to understand (prep). They even created a guide for use to follow.Â

If you would like to have the “prep essentials” you can find them here.Â

If you think your piece of furniture will be a “bleeder” like the redwoods or has knots that needs to be sealed as stated above, you will need to use the Zinsser B-I-N with Shellac. It’s important that you use the Shellac based primer and NOT the synthetic. You can also use the clear shellac especially if you plan on distressing. You don’t want to use the first one if you plan on distressing as that one dries white. Â
I hope this info helps you with your project. Happy painting!
